Item Code: 2025-189

This Federal cartridge box plate is of the regulation 1839 pattern and was recovered from Battle of 2nd Manassas, Virginia in March 1955. Plate is in very good excavated condition. Constructed in the die-struck and rolled brass method, the oval brass accoutrement’s face has a central “US”. Face is very well preserved and has acquired a handsome smooth, dark brown patina. Some lead oxidation around rim on face. The lead filled back retains 100% of lead fill and is smooth. Both iron hooks are lightly rusted but strong and present.

Recovered by Sid Kerksis and comes with the envelope he stored the relic in. Envelope marked, “2s Manassas / Mar 55 / US Ctg box / plate”.  Mr. Sydney C. Kerksis was a legendary early Civil War relic hunter and the author of “Plates and Buckles of the American Military 1795-1874”.

This highly pleasing, original brass U.S. cartridge box plate would be fine addition to any Civil War collection.   [jet][ph:L]
