This Civil War Ohio Volunteer Militia Enlisted Infantry belt plate, is in good excavated condition.  This early war belt plate measures 52 mm x 75 mm and is constructed from die-struck rolled sheet brass.  Backside is filled with lead and has single arrow hook and clasp device embedded.

This enlisted pattern plate has raised letters “O V M” centered on the face surrounded with a normal double border at the outer plate edge.  There is some rim loss on the lefthand edge and one small crack. Lead backing is solid with loss on the one edge corresponding to damage on front. Both sides have even orange-brown patina typical of area where this was recovered – Orange County, VA. Digger’s name and recovery location marked on back.

This excavated OVM belt plate is a nice example of an early war militia plate.   [jet][ph:L]
