This is an excavated relic, but the condition is excellent. This is the false embroidered stamped brass frame from a Smith Patent shoulder strap. This piece was dug by the late author/publisher Dean Thomas along Miles Drive at Chancellorsville, Virginia.
This strap is a slightly smaller size than normally encountered, being approximately 3.25” x 1.25”. It is in excellent “dug” condition retaining its curved “shoulder” shape with only very minor wear. Original gilt wash remains along recessed lines and edges. The underside shows nine small solder marks while none of the attachment wires remain.
Original non-excavated specimens sometimes had Smith’s patent information stenciled on the underside: “JAS. S. SMITH / PATENT / JUNE 18, 1861 / 15 DUTCH STREET / NEW YORK.”
This is a fine relic from an officer’s coat lost during the Battle of Chancellorsville. Recovered by Dean many, many decades ago when it wasn’t unusual for brass relics to come out of the ground in this condition. [jet][ph:L]
