Presented here is the excavated brass face of what was once a “Volunteer Maine Militia” oval waist belt plate or cartridge box plate that was issued to the State’s volunteer infantrymen early in the Civil War.
Maine formally organized its Volunteer Militia (VMM) in 1851 and then restructured it again in 1861 when the war broke out to raise and equip ten regiments of volunteer infantry for two years of Federal service. These small oval brass plates were introduced sometime after the adoption of the Maine State button in 1855 and prior to April 1861.
In good “dug” condition, this oval brass “skin” measures 71mm long x 42mm high. This piece was die-struck, sheet brass. This likely only had a single brass arrowhead hook and clasp device soldered on the back as evidenced by the light solder marks remaining. There is no lead fill.
Face exhibits minor small dents and dings around the edges and a vertical fold line between the “M”s. Nice brown and green patina overall. Recovered from Poolesville, Maryland, from an area that the 16th and 17th Maine regiments camped. [jet] [ph:m]
