This is an excavated Civil War cavalry saber scabbard, about 2/3 of its original length, retaining its throat and both carrying ring bands. It is rusted overall, but has no holes or deep dents and both carrying rings are place. Interestingly, the break across the lower end of the scabbard, dented slightly at this point, is fairly even, indicating the lower portion was broken off and not just rusted away. What caused the break is unknown, but it had to be something fairly strong. We note the style of the throat, etc., indicates it is a scabbard for an imported cavalry saber, and one of the 1860 pattern rather than the more commonly imported 1840 pattern. [sr] [ph:L]
