RELIC, US PATTERN 1826 EAGLE BREAST PLATE FROM ANTIETAM

$195.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2024-1673

This U.S. shoulder belt plate was meant to be affixed to the front of the shoulder belt for the infantry cartridge box. The brass face features a spread-winged eagle design. The back was lead filled and would have had iron wire loops embedded.

The face is complete with good detail and covered with a mostly green patina. Complete lead fill on reverse with very slight reverse curvature at the edge, likely from ground freeze. There is a faint maker’s stamp in the lead, “W.H. SMITH / BROOKLYN”. Both iron loops have rusted away.

In very good “dug” condition. Reported to have been recovered on the Roulette Farm at Antietam. Comes with a 2017 letter from Andy Keyser of GETTYSBURG RELICS.   [jet] [ph:L]
