Here is an excavated, Confederate 3” field artillery projectile commonly referred to as an Archer Bolt. The design was likely produced by Dr. Robert Archer a partner of Joseph Anderson, the superintendent at the Tredegar Foundry in Richmond. Constructed of cast iron, this bolt features a pointed nose and body that tapers to the base.
This bolt has its original 1” wide, thick lead sabot placed behind the center of the bolt. The sabot has some “play” but remains firmly attached. It is also moderately banged up. The iron exhibits deep brown tone with a nice smooth surface.
Used at the very beginning of the war, they were described as ineffective and often discredited for use. These are seldom recovered from Civil War battlefields after 1862. This specimen was reported as coming from “Springhill Cemetery on the Louis Landon Farm” at Antietam.
This Confederate Archer bolt makes a rare addition to any Civil War field artillery display. [jet][ph:L]
