The Fredericksburg area was filled with army camps on both sides of the river and tools like this were needed for the construction of winter huts as well as cutting trees for firewood and field works. This is unmarked and tough to date precisely but the socket shows some crude workmanship, dating it somewhat early. The condition overall is very good, with the metal showing gray overall with some thin light brown rust, but the edge showing brighter and exhibiting just a couple of shallow chips. The top of the socket shows some battering and short crack on one side, possibly from the forging rather than use.  [sr] [ph:m]
