This is the classic Confederate frame buckle still often referred to as a Georgia frame since so many were found in that state by early relic hunters and this one, in fact, was recovered at Kennesaw Mountain, near Marietta. Fought in late June 1864, the battle was part of Sherman’s campaign against Atlanta and involved a series of failed Union assaults on Confederate positions blocking Sherman’s progress until troops on the Union right were able to get behind the Confederate left to pry Johnston out of his position, allowing Sherman to resume a campaign of maneuver and flanking movements.
This buckle is in excellent condition with no bends or breaks, smooth metal, and a deep brownish-green color. The plate is cast with the integral center bar and teeth flat on one side and very slightly rounded on the other. It was very well finished, with nicely squared inner and outer corners of the frame and those next to the center bar just slightly rounded.
This were elegantly simple, practical, and robust belt plates, probably the closest to a Confederate general service belt buckle as there is, but still manage to show a number of variations, which is not surprising since they were relatively easy to make and were in production throughout the south.
