This is a good, excavated example of the British sword bayonet for the short rifle, imported by both sides in the Civil War. The blade has no bends or breaks and is missing just a small bit of the tip and essentially full length. The hilt is intact as well, with good crossguard, muzzle ring and upper and lower finials. The grip slabs are, of course, gone. The release button is in place, though the spring is missing. The tang shows the hole for the screw to secure it. The metal is dark brown with pitting overall and some light brown areas.

For details on these bayonets see especially Noe and Sebaroli, and The English Connection with attention to those imported by the south. There were several different pattern British short rifles imported during the war by both sides, which are often undifferentiated in the records. Overall totals for the north include at least 12,000 imported by US Ordnance, and another 4,000 by the state of New York. Noe and Sebaroli note that Confederate records indicate 9,175 short Enfield rifles had been imported to the south by December 1861, but estimate total imports of both sides at just 30,000, a small fraction of the long  Enfield Rifle Muskets brought in. Interestingly, the rifles were preferred to some other available arms by some southern cavalry commanders such as Forrest, being easier to handle on horseback than the rifle musket, but more accurate and longer range than the carbine. This one would be usually described under the blanket designation of Pattern 1856, but the short mortise without extension groove makes it a Pattern 1860 by Noe and Sebaroli’s definition.  [sr] [PH:L]
