This ring is accompanied by short presentation note signed by Mr. Joseph Fisher of Strasburg, Va. The note indicates it was “made from a cap of a shell (?) found on Fisher’s Hill Battle-Field Va.” The occasion of the gift is not noted, but it likely dates to the 1880s or 1890s. Fisher’s Hill was fought in September 1864 near Strasburg as part of Sheridan’s campaign against Early in the Shenandoah Valley. In the aftermath of Third Winchester Early took up a strong position resting his right on a branch of the Shenandoah and his left at Fisher’s Hill. Sheridan managed to break the Confederate line, but with the failure his cavalry under Torbert to cut off Early’s retreat the Confederates were able to pull back to Waynesboro.

The word “shell” is slightly damaged, but we think that is what is says. In any case, it is an interesting use of a battlefield relic. [sr] [ph:L]
