This is an interesting variation on the tin drum canteens that became very popular in the 1850s following the adoption of round drum-shaped tin canteen with convex sides by the US Army in 1836, though their light weight had always something to recommend them to the militia. This style uses two convex halves and very narrow band around the perimeter, giving the impression of two pie plates joined together.  Measures 6” in diameter.

It is fitted with the typical tin spout with folded top edge and narrow brackets for a shoulder sling. One of these is missing from one shoulder. The other two are present. This is gray in color with whitish and brown spots of corrosion, but no holes. It looks very much like an early battlefield pick-up, but we have no provenance for it. It is an unusual pattern however, and would make a good addition to a canteen collection.  [sr][ph:L]
