This is a great, excavated no-doubt-about-it Confederate cavalry spur with the iron rowel showing rust and frozen, but largely intact with just a few losses to edges from corrosion. The heel band and neck are brass, now with an even light green patina mixing with some brown, but no bends, cracks or breaks. Both heel band and neck are flat, rectangular in cross-section, with the heel band flaring slightly at the tips to accommodate and reinforce the crudely finished strap slots. The neck is raised, to come off the upper half of the heel band, and is curved on the underside, but rises straight from the heel band and juts straight back at a right angle. The slot for the rowel is off-center and the neck shows a slight swell indicating it was not quite wide enough for insertion of the rowel, but the maker was more concerned with utility than elegance and forged ahead.

Spurs were a key piece of horse gear and southern spurs show a wonderful variety and spectrum of workmanship as suppliers struggled to keep up with sudden massive demand as military forces dramatically expanded.  [sr]  [PH:L]
