The tow hook was an essential tool for the artillery. Measuring 14 inches long overall, it featured a claw-hammer head on one end of an iron bar handle. The other end of the handle was bent at a right angle to form a short, pointy hook.
Civil War artillery ammunition was packed in sturdy crates to protect the contents. The claw was needed for prying off the lids and the hook was handy for drawing out the tow packing material used to keep the rounds from shifting inside the crate. The small hammer could be used to tack the tin straps to the wood sabots and anywhere else a hammer was necessary.
These were simply, but ruggedly made. This one is in very good “relic” condition with only fine surface pitting overall. [jet] [ph:L]
