This excavated Pattern 1839 US cartridge box plate has a smooth brown patina on the face. The oval brass face features a raised “US”.  The plate’s reverse has 99% of the lead fill. The two iron loops are rusted away. A maker’s mark is stamped in the center of the lead, “E. GAYLORD”.

This relic was recovered by Syd Kirksis who was a pioneer in the field of relic hunting. Sid recorded the recovery information on a small envelope which comes with this plate. This particular plate was recovered in October of 1965 at Camp Nelson, Kentucky.

The US Army established Camp Nelson as a fortified supply depot in April 1863. The site evolved into a massive recruitment and training center for African American soldiers (United States Colored Troops) and a refugee camp for their families.  [jet] [PH:L]
