This is the cast and chased brass counterguard and knucklebow from a regulation US 1850 pattern foot officer’s sword, the standard sword carried in the Civil War by infantry lieutenants and captains, as well as company level officers in foot, or “heavy,” artillery regiments, etc. This shows dark on the upper side of the guard, but preserves some gilt finish on the underside. The openwork, scrolling floral motifs between integrally cast branches in the guard are very good. The small scroll at the end of the knucklebow that would join with the pommel cap is there, though the knucklebow is bent. [SR][PH:L]
