CONFEDERATE TWO-PIECE “CS” SWORD BELT PLATE RECOVERED IN ORANGE, VIRGINIA

$3,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2024-22

This original Civil War Confederate two-piece interlocking sword belt buckle is in very good excavated condition and was recovered in Orange, Virginia. The buckle is complete and all original with no bends, breaks or repairs. The “CS” letters have short vertical serifs and disk has a narrow edge. The disk shows some stippling from the sand casting on the background of the face with the letters showing brown and the background a mix of more gray and cream. The wreath has stronger green tones to the raised portions and yellowish green in the recesses. The same colors are evident on the reverse as are the signs of sand casting. A small “VI” bench number appears on the outer bar of the belt slot of the wreath. The channel shows some signs of finishing.

The belt plate is similar to Mullinax (1991) Plates 059, 060, and 061. The first and third are both Virginia recoveries. The second is non-dug.  [sr] [ph:m]
