CARTRIDGE BOX PLATE FROM CEDAR MOUNTAIN RECOVERED BY SYD KERKSIS 1956

$450.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 490-5772

This is a very nice M1839 cartridge box plate with an even, greenish-brown patina on the face, showing only some tiny spots and a couple of shallow scratches, along with an edge having no dents, showing some brownish-white residue but also faint brass color. The iron wire loops are in place on the reverse and lead solder fill is fully intact, showing largely gray with some spots of white oxidation and some rust stains from the iron wire set into the back and forming the loops.

Kerksis was one of the real pioneers in Civil War collecting with books on military belt plates and projectiles that are still useful. This comes with his original storage envelope for it on which he noted the find location as “Cedar Mtn” and specifically as the, “Wood edge of wheatfield,” along with the date of the recovery as October 1956.

Cedar Mountain, fought August 9, 1862, marked one of the few times Stonewall Jackson got in real trouble for a time. The wheatfield was located north of the Orange-Culpeper Road and was the scene of fierce fighting between Confederates under Garnett and Ronald, commanding the old Stonewall Brigade, and Union troops under Crawford, who pushed the Confederates back until they were rallied by Jackson personally.    [sr] [ph:m/L]
