CONFEDERATE RICHMOND-STYLE TWO-PIECE “CS” SWORD BELT PLATE FROM ANTIETAM

Item Code: 766-1924

This original Civil War Confederate two-piece interlocking belt buckle is the “Richmond style,” noted for its tall, thin and finely shaped letters with tall, straight serifs on a central disk that features a narrow border. This corresponds to Mullinax , Confederate Belt Buckles and Plates (1991) Plate 001, and has the same pattern wreath with ribbon ties at top and bottom, beveled bars on the tongue and wreath, and pronounced step on the reverse of the tongue bar. The pattern is now thought by some to have been produced by Shay, Williamson & Co. of Raleigh, NC, and supplied to the Richmond Arsenal for mounting on saber belts at its Ordnance Harness Shops in Clarksville, Va.

The buckle is complete, all original, in excellent excavated condition, with no bends, breaks or repairs and shows just typical slight bowing to the belt loops from actually having been worn on a belt. The plate was well finished, showing strong detail and crisp letters. It has a pleasing, light olive patina showing some tan and grayish-white in the recesses that rather highlights the detail. The reverse has some of the same grayish white, as do the edges of belt loop, shows slightly more of a green, and is also well finished though showing some of the stippled pattern typical of sand casting.

This plate was recovered at Antietam, one of the most famous battles of the war,  needing no recounting to a Civil War collector, and thus adds a tremendously strong historical association to its quality, condition, and rarity.  [sr] [ph:m]
