This plate was recovered on the battlefield of Manassas by Syd Kerksis, one of the legendary early relic hunters and collectors, author of books on military belt plates and Civil War projectiles. The plate comes with Kerksis’ original paper storage envelope bearing his ink notation that he found it in November of 1954 east of the Sudley Road with the name “MORRELL” written under the location. George Web Morell commanded the 1^st Division of the 5^th Corps under Fitz-John Porter. This unit was located east of the Sudley Road on August 30, 1862.

The face of the plate has a very nice chocolate-brown patina and is free of any dings and dents. The “U.S.” stamping is strong.

Reverse has 100% of the lead fill with both arrow hooks and tongue.

Item comes displayed in a Riker box with the original storage envelope.  [AD] [ph:L]
