Tin candle lamp or "dark lantern" dug in one of the Federal camps around Fredericksburg, VA.
Measures approximately 8” tall x 3” in diameter. Tin body with two ventilators on top. Small brass ring on top. Lens and its frame missing. In relic condition with rust and some loss of tin. Heavily coated to preserve.
Purchased from an old-time digger who hunted in the 1960s-70s around Fredericksburg and Falmouth.
By the 1850s, this basic lantern design appeared and became standard for nearly a century. These were variously called Dark Lanterns, Police Lanterns, or Bullseye Lanterns. A similar lamp was recovered from within the Confederate submarine Hunley. [jet] [ph:L]
