These three-groove minie balls would have been for the .54 caliber Mississippi rifle or .55 caliber Austrian Lorenz.
This style bullet features a smooth body, three fine grooves, is nose cast, and has a truncated cone cavity. All, however, are very crudely trimmed at the nose.
Of the two specimens offered here, one had the sprue trimmed too much while the other retains a blob on the nose.
At one time these were thought to have been made at the Selma Arsenal, but none have been located at the site on in the river where materials were dumped after the end of the war. Recent research has shown these to have been cast in single cavity molds manufactured by Eli Whitney prior to the Civil War.
Both available bullets are in very good condition with white/tan patinas. [jet] [ph:jet]
