This is the scarce bullet for the Christian Sharps pistols manufactured between 1857-1858.  Solid bullet, raised bands, tie ring, nipped sprue on base.  This pattern of bullet, with extended ring, is known as a “ringtail.”  This ringtail, or tie ring, was where the cartridge case was tied to the bullet with thread.  The case was filled with powder and closed by the usual folds.

This is a nice bullet in “dropped” condition. Brown patina overall. Short style, measures 0.377” x 0.62”.

One of the most famous names in Civil War firearms, Christian Sharps, received his first patent for his breechloading mechanism in 1848. He later sold this patent and the Civil War-era Sharps carbines and rifles that are so familiar to us now were made by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company in New Haven, CT.

After breaking ties with that company in 1854, Christian moved to Philadelphia and opened a factory just west of the city near the “wire bridge”. The Fairmount Rifle Works made various weapons, but of interest to us here are the single shot pistols that utilized his sliding breech system.   [jet] [ph:jet]
