CONFEDERATE RICHMOND SPUR- THE C.S. ORDNANCE SPUR- ORANGE, VA.

Item Code: 1184-81

This pattern of Confederate spur was first published and identified as a Richmond product by Albaugh in Confederate Arms (p.188.) It likely represents the Confederate Ordnance Department’s effort to produce a standardized design. Crouch noted that many show the same high-copper content brass used on Richmond Arsenal two-piece belt plates and show signs of finishing by sandstone grinding wheels.

They are simple and functional. The side bars are flat, without ornamentation, and have simple square slots. The necks taper and have rounded ends, but are flat sided as well. The ten-point iron rowel on this one is in place and complete. This has a nice, light olive patina with some greenish-gray, and was recovered in Orange, Virginia. There are no bends, breaks or repairs.

This is the classic Confederate cavalry spur and all the more rare as an Ordnance Department product. [sr] [ph:L]
