Item is in good condition. Brass face with typical eagle stamping. Very good detail remaining with nice dark brown patina.

Back has 98% lead fill with scattered pitting. Both wire loops have rusted away. Stamped in the lead is “W.H. WILKINSON / SPRINGFIELD, MASS” in one direction and “U.S. / T.J SHEPARD” stamped perpendicular.

These plates were for use on the shoulder sling of the regulation infantry cartridge box. Recovered at Chancellorsville.  [jet] [ph:L]
