Excavated rifleman’s buckle. Found together with all four pieces. The model 1855 rifleman’s buckle consists of a two-piece brass buckle and two brass belt slides. These slides have holes on the top which allow the regulation infantry knapsack to hook into. This feature helped support the knapsack up on the shoulders.
All four pieces are complete and all have matching brown patina with light surface dirt in spots. The two slides remain in perfect condition. The two belt pieces have good fronts, but the thin loops on the back have bends and separations likely from a farmer’s plow or the digger’s shovel. Still a good, complete set.
Recovered from the Fredericksburg, Virginia area. [jet] [ph:L]
