This is an excavated brass star. The piece has a smooth chocolate-brown patina overall. Measures 35mm across. A small central hole on the back side is the only indication of where an attachment device was once mounted. Condition is perfect other than the missing pin, loop, or wire.

Recovered near Fredericksburg, Virginia. Due to the location of the recovery, this is likely a Union 12th Army Corps badge, but could even be a Confederate officer’s collar rank insignia.  [jet]  [PH:L]
