Offered here is a relic iron artillery worm or wiper. This iron piece, shaped like a big cork screw, would have been mounted on a long wood shaft and used to remove soft debris such as powder bag remnants from a cannon barrel.
This piece measures 9.25" long overall with a 5.5" socket. The socket has holes where a pin would have secured it to the wood shaft.
Iron surface is lightly pitted but the whole piece remains strong and solid and must have been dug long ago.
A scarce item for the artillery collector! [jet] [ph:L]
