This French cutlass is complete with the blade, guard, grip and pommel. The attached tag says that it was found by a farmer plowing his fields on the 1779 Newtown, New York battlefield and that it is a Revolutionary War sword but the tag is in error. It is actually a French naval cutlass dating from the 1840-1850’s.
The slightly curved blade meas. approx. 26.50 inches long and is 1.50 inches wide at the ricasso. The blade surface and edge is pitted throughout but any rust or dirt has been cleaned away and the natural surface of the blade is visible.
Iron hilt is complete with guard, knuckle bow, octagonal iron grip and ridged pommel. All show light to moderate pitting. The hilts of these cutlasses were usually japanned but none of the original finish remains.
Item is solid throughout. [ad] [ph:L]
