This is a heavy artillery projectile for the 7” Brooke rifle. Of Confederate manufacture, this is a solid bolt with two bourrelet rings, blunt nose, and copper sabot bolted to the bottom.
The sabot system on this projectile is known as the Type II Tennessee sabot which utilized a large copper disc with three studs that projected into the base of the bolt; the piece being secured with a central iron bolt. This shell pattern utilized two raised bourrelet rings so only the rings had to be accurately machined, the majority of the body could be left rough. The top is only slightly rounded, this nearly flat top was designed to deliver maximum impact against the Federal ironclads.
Projectile measures approximately 13.5” tall and just under 7” in diameter. The copper sabot is nearly 0.75” thick and held in place by a 1.25” square nut.
Overall condition is excellent. [jet]
