This souvenir gavel bears an engraved brass tag reading, “Made of wood from Thos. Jefferson’s Monticello Charlottesville, Va.” Jefferson started on his neo-classical mansion in 1768, but worked on it continually over his lifetime, much of the rebuilding taking place after his return from Europe and service as Secretary of State and well into his term as President (1801-1809.) Five years after his death the estate was sold in 1831 and only rescued and preserved through the subsequent efforts of Uriah Levy and his nephew Jefferson Monroe Levy. This gavel probably dates to about 1923, when the estate was purchased from Jefferson Levy by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation and various restoration work was done.
This is literally a piece of Monticello and there are not many real Jefferson associated pieces out there. [sr]
