$125.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M25711

The Washington Elm stood on the East lawn of the United States Capitol grounds, directly opposite (approximately 100 feet East) of the Senate wing of the Capitol Building. Tests at the time of its removal in 1948 showed the Elm to be 160 years old.

Accompanying gavel is a letter of documentation written by Architect of the Capitol, David Lynn, to Honorable Cliff Clevenger, House of Representatives, on official Architect of the Capitol, Washington, D.C. letterhead, dated October 22, 1953. Along with letter is an extract from the 1882 report of Frederick Law Olmsted on the trees in the United States Capitol Grounds which states that the tree was reputed to have been planted by George Washington at the time that he built his brick house north of the Capitol in 1798.

Gavel has a glossy finish and measures 11” total length x 3 ½” wide. Very good condition with a few scattered nicks.  [sl]
