Item is the scabbard only of a Model 1860 Cavalry saber accompanied by a letter from a previous owner giving some particulars in regards to the history of the piece.
The scabbard is complete with the throat, both ring mounts and rings as well as the drag. The metal surfaces are rusted but not badly. There is some light pitting as well. The scabbard shows the usual dings and dents consistent with use. Overall the scabbard is in solid condition.
With the item is a notarized letter dated June 21, 2017. The letter states that the scabbard came from the collection of the Anderson family of Virginia. The family owned property along Lee’s retreat route from Petersburg and a cavalry skirmish occurred there on April 5, 1865. One Confederate soldier was killed and buried behind the main house. Also, the Anderson family had two ancestors with the last name of Jeter, who served as Confederate officers. The letter states that the family is not sure if the scabbard belonged to one of their ancestors or to the Confederate killed on their farm in 1865. Letter is duly notarized by a Notary Public.
Either way this scabbard no doubt saw use during the war. [jet]
