This is an excavated specimen and this common size was for the 3” Ordnance rifle. This shell was fired and retains its lead sabot and brass fuse adapter. The three flame grooves run along the body of the shell and the patent information is faintly evident as cast into the base cup. The shell has been cleaned and coated long ago, and could probably stand to be recoated. A silver paint identification has been applied by noted author/collector Mac Mason. It reads, “U.S. 3-INCH HOTCHKISS SHELL WEIGHT 9 LBS FOUND SPOTSYLVANIA VIRGINIA 1966”.
A very nice and displayable “Mac Mason” artillery shell. [jet]
