This is a very nice two piece tongue and wreath “CS” plate. It has a rich chocolate patina that matches perfectly on each section. The two halves fit together well. The good fit and the matching patina show that these two pieces have long been together and are not “married up.”
The “CS” letters have good definition but do show some slight casting flaws. Also the keeper on the wreath is slightly bowed and appears to have been cast that way. Evidence of a repair to the belt loop on the right side in the above photographs.
When hooked together and set on a table top the plate lays flat with no curve.
Attached to the plate is an orange tag from a previous sale relating that the plate is from the collection of the late Fred Edmunds who acquired it from the late John Graham. A note on the card reads “WHEN THIS TWO PIECE PLATE WAS DUG, IT STILL HAD ITS ORIGINAL BELT ATTACHED-WHICH DISINTEGRATED.”
This is a nice dug example of a classic Confederate plate. [ad]
