Excavated pewter cuff button from the Revolutionary War.  Flat button with raised Arabic “7” in the center, a thin raised ring open at the top with “dolphin” heads, a thin raised outer ring, and a raised dot at the twelve o’clock position.  Reverse has a perfect turret shank with four holes drilled.  17 mm.  Reference, Troiani #AMO7.f.  Coated with clear lacquer.  In excellent condition.

These “Massachusetts Ordnance” buttons were purchased by the State of Massachusetts directly from France.  The numbers on this style of button have no relation to the regiments that ended up wearing them.  Don Troiani believes these were most likely made by the Tallene Manufactory who made buttons for the French Army until 1783.  Recovered by Dean Thomas in the “New Boston” camp in the Hudson Highlands of New York.  [jet]
