This stirrup was recovered from City Point, Virginia, after the explosion on August 9, 1864, that was a result of Confederate sabotage. Confederate Secret Service agent John Maxwell has smuggled a bomb with a timed fuse aboard an ammunition barge. It caused a tremendous explosion that shook the city and caused much damage.
Item has a nice, darkened patina with very slight surface rust. Measures 6” high x 5 ¼” wide. [SM]
