Nice looking oval South Carolina belt plate dug in 1955 near the famous railroad cut at 2nd Manassas.
The plate is small in size and meas. approx. 2.75 inches in length x 1. 5/8 inches wide. The face has a wonderful dark patina with prominent letters “SC” at center. The edges of the plate show light wear and a few very minor chips.
The reverse has 95% of the lead fill with the surface only showing some scattered lead loss. Both the single arrow hook and tongue are present.
With the item is an old typed label that reads “2ND MANASSAS 9-17-55 / NEAR DEEP CUT.”
The area where the plate was recovered was occupied by members of Brigadier General Maxcy Gregg’s brigade which consisted of the 1st South Carolina, 1st South Carolina Rifles (Orr’s), 12th, 13th, and 14th South Carolina Infantry. This brigade was located just to the north of the railroad or “Deep” cut made famous by Louisiana troops who defended the cut by throwing rocks when they ran out of ammunition.
A very scarce plate in nice condition.
