The face of this Pattern 1826 eagle breast plate has a wonderful olive patina over the entire surface. The face is in near perfect condition with no dings or scratches.
The reverse has 100% of the lead fill with both eyelets intact. Just above one of the eyelets is stamped the name of the US Inspector “T. J. SHEPARD” and running at right angles to this mark is the maker “W. H. WILKINSON/ SPRINGFIELD, MASS.” There is also a “US” stamping at center. This “US” mark is partially obscured by a small spot of rust.
This plate was recovered in 1968 in Snake Creek Gap which is a pass in Rocky Face Ridge near Dalton, Georgia. Union forces under Major General James McPherson occupied the Gap during the Atlanta Campaign.
