ULTRA RARE!!! U.S .577 caliber ammunition chest originating from the WATERVLIET ARSENAL still partially filled with 30 packages of rifle-musket rounds (5 packages on the surface are disintegrated with exposed rounds & 25 totally intact specimens below). As can be seen, this box has had the center section of the lid removed at sometime in its history and some cartridge packs removed. There is presently a section of Plexiglas covering the open slot for protection and internal viewing.
The overall outer surface had originally been painted in a deep forest green color and stenciled on both end section boards with: CARTRIDGES (In ¾” white lettering) located above the handle cleats. Below each of the end cleats are marked (with the same size ¾” white lettering) which reads: MUSKET RIFLE. Also included within this stencil is an interesting profile of a conical minie ball round. The remainder of the lettering reads: CAL. 577. Another unusual set of stencil markings is located on the length side of the box, which reads in a semi-circular wording: FROM NEW YORK ARSNL. Followed by (in straight line lettering beneath) INVOICED DEC 9TH / 76. This no doubt signified that it was a U.S Government de-acquisitioned item from the arsenal on that date.
The overall chest measurements are as follows: 18”in length (Measuring from each of the cleat end handles) by 8” in height and 12”in width. There are some wood fragments missing on the upper areas of both end boards, which were a result of prying off of the center section of the screwed on lid. Unfortunately, there are no longer signs of any of the printing still visible on the packages themselves, due to long-term exposure to the elements over the many years. So, if you have ever considered adding a true Civil War period ammunition crate along with packages of rounds still intact, this certainly would be the one to advance your collection!
