This seldom seen artifact is a very good excavated example of a three-piece brass button as worn on Wisconsin militia uniforms. Examples of this button were most likely worn on uniforms of the 4th thru the 8th Wisconsin between 1860 and 1865. Of coat-size, this staff button is of three-piece construction with an outer ring border that has oxidized and shows rusting. Face and back good with most of the original gold gilt on the face. Face has a very slight thumb depression. Button is good and is classed as a WC200D1 in Tice’s reference volume. The circular, high convex, 22-mm brass device exhibits a state seal at the center of a shield with a plow and crossed shovel and pick. Shield is flanked by a sailor and a yeoman, all on a lined field. Back side excellent with shank strong and intact. Backmark of EXTRA QUALITY*. This State of Wisconsin general use uniform button is a fine addition to any Civil War button display or Wisconsin-focused collection.
