This period stereoview features one of the most photographed locations of the Civil War - Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Site of the “Battle Above the Clouds”, it became an iconic spot where veterans flocked for photos even before the war had ended. This view shows the path of the assault of the men under General Hooker.
The card is in good condition overall. The image is mounted to an off-white card with very minimal wear to the edges. The reverse incudes a detailed list of Tennessee sites offered as part of the catalogue of photographer and publisher J. B. LINN. It is titled “Lookout Mountain Views” just above the publisher credit and list of photographic offerings. A stamp at upper left reads “GIVEN FEB. 28, 1929 BY WM. S. APPLETON” while a penciled notation in the opposite corner reads “WS 9597 9 AO”. Overall measurements are 3.4” x 7”.
A very nice and highly collectible stereoscopic image card of an uncommonly seen view of Lookout Mountain. [cm][PH:L]
