Many Prisoner of War camps earned their infamous reputations, with one of the most famous being Libby Prison in Richmond. Originally intended to house captured Union officers during the Peninsula Campaign and the Seven Days Battles, its population inevitably grew past its capacity. Before evacuating most of the population to camps in Georgia, officers and enlisted men alike described the conditions as deplorable as disease ran rampant and supplies dwindled.
This card features a dual image of Libby, with a group of men (either staff, guards, or POW’s) standing at its front corner. The image is mounted to a muted yellow card with light wear to the upper right corner and bottom edge and is flanked on both side by text reading “PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY” and “THE WAR FOR THE UNION”. The reverse features a pasted large, blue tag which reads “WAR VIEWS. Libby Prison, north side, Richmond, Va. No. 3161 PUBLISHED BY E. & H. T. ANTHONY & CO., AMERICAN AND FOREIGN STEREOSCOPIC EMPORIUM, 501 BROADWAY, NEW-YORK.” Overall measurements are 7” x 3.35”. A water stain can be seen at left, along with an ink signature which reads “Chas. S.(?) Bristol” and two penciled “4” ‘s.
This is a rare and highly collectible stereoview from the Civil War period for the discerning Civil War collector. [CM][PH:L]
