Hardly a military garment in the North was not graced by the storied Waterbury Button Company.  Their manufacturing capabilities filled government contracts for many years prior to the Civil War and their buttons could even be found on Confederate jackets and coats with relative frequency.  They continued to supply our military with buttons through all future conflicts and still manufacture dress uniform buttons for our military. This view features the famous factory in Waterbury, Connecticut that harnessed the Naugatuck River’s power.  It is labeled “No. 135 – Waterbury Button Shop.”  The card borders on either side of the image read “WATERBURY AND VICINITY”.  The card front is an antique orange with very minimal edge or corner wear.  The reverse of the card is a subtle pink with a stylized logo reading, “PHOTOGRAPHED BY ALFRED A. ADT, WATERBURY, CT.”  Beneath it is the text “Duplicates at any time. Order from Number.”  Written in pen is the note “Mrs. Redfield’s father’s shop” while written in light pencil is an old price and item or catalogue number. Overall measurements are 7” x 3.8”.  Though this is an uncommon card among collectors, it is similar in style to an early series published in the 1870’s – as the factory complex was in the full swing of production.

An uncommon card with many layers of history.  Its age and period view are appropriate for any collection spanning 1812 through the extended antebellum period and conflicts, the Civil War, the Indians Wars, Reconstruction – and well beyond.
