This view was sometimes identified as Custer as a lieutenant, likely from the fatigue dress, but is designated by Katz as #38, showing Custer as a general and dated by him as on or about July 11, 1864, with the date given credibility by the range of its negative number in the Anthony catalog and, in this case especially, by its title as “Gen. Custer at his headquarters.” Custer is shown seated on a simple camp stool in front of his tent, which has its sides rolled up for ventilation, showing what appears to be a cot on the left and his trunk at the back. He holds a record book, map or papers in one hand. His light colored hat lies on the ground next to one of the dogs who frequently show up with him in photographs. He wears what seems to be a loose-fitting sack coat, likely appropriate for July in Virginia.
The image is on an orange mount reading “Photographic History” and left and “The war for the Union” at right. The applied label on the reverse reads “1861. WAR VIEWS. 1865” along with the negative number and title, along with statement of authenticity as a Brady view and statement of copyright by John C. Taylor, who purchased about 1879 the set of negatives obtained by E. & H.T. Anthony from Brady as settlement for default on payment for photographic supplies. Taylor published these on his own and later in partnership as Taylor and Huntington in the 1880s-1890s. The tax stamp has been removed from something else and applied to the card in effort to make it a appear a wartime stereoview.
The condition is good, with bumps and abrasions to the edges of the mount, and some soiling, as shown, but only a small set of wrinkles at the upper right of the left half of the image and a slight rub just above the dog’s head on the right. [ad] [PH:L]
