CENTENNIAL CABINET CARD IMAGE OF “THE SPIRIT OF ‘76”

$15.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 668-152

Cabinet card titled “YANKEE DOODLE” showing the painting of “The Spirit of ‘76” as done by A. M. Willard. Apparently when the painting was first done “YANKEE DOODLE” was its title and only later did it become known as “THE SPIRIT OF ’76.” This photograph was produced to celebrate the United States Centennial in 1876 and bears the original title of the painting.

The card has light chipping along one side as well as some light surface dirt. The paper of the image is beginning to separate from the backing but it is still attached at top and the image is not affected.

Reverse has imprint for RYDER’S in CLEVELAND, OHIO. Bottom of reverse has bold ink signature dated “OCT. 1876.” Signature looks to be for B. R. WOLVER.

As evidenced by the inscription this image was no doubt purchased by Mr. Wolver 143 years ago as a souvenir of the Centennial.

Interesting little item.  [ad]
