Subject is posed leaning against a draped column in front of a balustrade. He wears a dark bi-corn, dark short jacket and matching trousers. The jacket is double-breasted with a high collar and has brush epaulettes with a crest of a spread-winged eagle in flight holding an anchor within the “clamshell” and a single star in the rank field of each. At his waist is his sword belt with two-piece tongue and wreath Navy buckle and a Model 1852 Naval Officer’s sword.
Contrast and clarity are excellent. Paper and mount have light surface dirt.
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for R. A. LEWIS…NEW YORK. There is also the negative number of “1475” in period pencil as well as another unreadable word and “1866.” [ad] [ph:L]
