The subject is posed in front of a painted backdrop of a forest lake. He stands with both hands resting on the hilt of his drawn Model 1860 cavalry saber. He wears the Model 1858 dress hat turned up on the right side with very visible crossed sabers on the front with a regimental number of “5’ or “6” below. He also wears an issue shell jacket with light colored trousers and knee-high boots and gauntlets on his hands. His sword belt is not visible but the drop holding his empty saber scabbard and the shoulder support strap are.

Contrast and clarity are good. Paper and mount have light surface dirt. Paper also has some minor edge wear at lower right.
