Nice photograph of an unidentified Confederate soldier. There is a pencil identification on the image but it is unreadable. This is an oval waist-up view of the man in a typically plain Confederate uniform jacket. This may be a second-generation image as the buttons show no detail and may have been gilted on the original photo. Image is clean and clear but perhaps slightly light in contrast.
The plain mount exhibits numerous small pin holes around the perimeter. Some residual traces of glue from being pasted in an album. Photographer's backmark, Bendann Bro. Baltimore St (Baltimore).
Daniel Bendann (1836 - 1914) along with his brother David Bendann were Civil War-era photographers known for their elegant photographic backgrounds. Daniel founded their gallery, Bendann Brothers, in 1859 and it remains in the family as of 2019, considered Baltimore's oldest gallery.
From the late William Turner collection. [jet] [PH:L]
