This extraordinary image shows three individuals seated at a table placed outdoors, under some trees, by a house.
The individual at left is an officer sitting cross-legged in a chair holding a book in his lap. He wears a light-colored single-breasted frock coat with matching trousers. Shoulder straps are visible but his rank cannot be seen.
Across from him is another officer. He is also posed seated and cross-legged and balancing a kepi with oilcloth cover on his knee. He wears a light-colored triple-breasted shell jacket with low standing collar and matching trousers. The jacket is open to reveal a matching vest. The shell jacket has a button on the side of the collar that is visible and again, shoulder straps are present but rank cannot be seen.
The third individual sits at center and is obviously younger than the two officers. He almost looks feminine in his facial appearance. This subject wears a light-colored triple-breasted shell jacket like the officer at right. There is a button on each side of the low standing collar with dark sergeant’s stripes with a star at center on each sleeve. This soldier is posed with both hands resting on the table which is covered with papers and books. Normally the sergeant stripes and star would indicate an ordnance sergeant. However, these men are obviously members of a militia unit and it is well known that militia units did not always follow the regulations. In this case the stripes with star could denote some higher rank such as 1st sergeant or sergeant-major..
Contrast and clarity are excellent. Paper and mount are also very good with only light surface dirt.
Reverse is blank but for some collector information in pencil.
Image is from the collection of the late William A. Turner. [ad][ph:L]
